The LEDs on my Saffire flash when the unit is connected to my MacBook Pro. Why?

Some of the older MacBook Pros have a lower power spec for the firewire bus. This means that the Saffire will require its power supply to boot successfully - the lights on the unit will continuosly flash if not provided with appropriate power by the firewire bus.
