Simon Changer chooses ISA428 to mix old with new

25/02/2010

London based engineer Simon Changer earned his stripes at Sony Music Studios, before going freelance as a music editor in 2003. Since then, he's worked with some of the world's most respected film composers, and various chart-riding pop and rock artists. His recent projects include David Gray's Draw The Line and Bjork's Live at Olympic Studios.

Simon has a production and recording space in North London, where he uses an ISA 428 to provide him a clean signal path into his Pro Tools rig. Simon explains the reason for choosing the ISA428: "I'd been doing the David Gray album, and we'd been using the vintage ISA110 modules he has at The Church. I like them very much, so when we moved in here the ISA428 just seemed to fit in really well."

Among Simon's gear collection are numerous vintage synths and electric pianos, which he has 'hard-wired' into his Pro Tools system via the ISA428. But he also uses the mic preamps alongside various classic but aging hardware, to get high-quality, clean signals into Pro Tools.
"I have some vintage Calrec modules and a Trident Trimix which are really lovely, but they're quite old and the mic pres don't give too much gain. The Focusrite lets me get good, clean gain."
