The result of this process is subjective and may not be perceived by a user as producing the same effects as the original products studied. OverviewLiquid Mix uses the same patented Dynamic Convolution process as Focusrite’s Liquid Channel. Unlike standard convolution techniques, Dynamic Convolution utilizes vast processing power to sample the effect of a classic processor on a series of audio pulses, at many different gain settings and frequencies. In Liquid Mix, all this processing is done using onboard DSP, so the processing has almost no effect on your computer’s own CPU. Liquid Mix’s DSP is housed within an elegant desktop control solution and connects to the computer via Firewire, which also provides bus-powering. The physical metering, screen, rotary controls and buttons on the hardware help to provide a tactile ergonomic solution, placing the sounds of an array of high quality vintage processors at your fingertips. You can choose to control each channel either from the desktop control unit, or from within the sequencer, using a simple GUI that functions exactly like a plug-in. An optional expansion card is available for Liquid Mix, allowing users to increase the number of available channels at higher sample rates (sold separately). The card is quick and easy to install and fits neatly into the underside of the unit. The original Liquid Channel won a plethora of awards, and has been a worldwide hit in the audio production world, from project studios to post production and broadcast facilities, not to mention the Live arena. Liquid Mix complements the original, delivering dynamic convolution for use in the mix. Since The Liquid Channel’s vast, elaborate and expensive analogue mic pre section is not required at mix down, Focusrite has been able to bring Liquid Technology to the masses at a much more accessible price. * IMPORTANT INFORMATION: FOCUSRITE, the FF logo, LIQUID TECHNOLOGY, LIQUID MIX CONTROL and the LIQUID MIX logo are trademarks of Focusrite Audio Engineering Ltd. A: Liquid Mix is a revolutionary Liquid multi-channel Firewire Mix processor, which allows a massive amount of quality vintage processing to be inserted into your DAW. It uses patented dynamic convolution (the digital part of The Liquid Channel) to emulate classic Compressors and EQs. The Liquid Mix appears as multiple plug-ins within your sequencer and can be used to process up to 32 channels simultaneously. Each one of these 32 (mono) plug-ins can be a different compressor and hybrid EQ, chosen from a list of 40 compressors and 20 EQs with more online, each powered and controlled by the Liquid Mix hardware. Q: So Liquid Mix is a plug-in? A: It appears as and acts exactly like a plug-in, or multiple plug-ins, but all of the processing goes on in the hardware, using the onboard DSP. This is how you can have 32 instances of Liquid Mix (processing 32 channels) simultaneously in one session, whilst barely touching the host CPU. In fact, as dynamic convolution is such a complex process, your computer would struggle to run even one instance without the help of external DSP support. Q: What is the latency incurred by Liquid Mix plugins? A: Liquid Mix latency is variable. It depends upon two factors: DAW buffer size and the Liquid Mix Minimum latency setting (described below). You can check the Liquid Mix plugin latency at any time while the plugin is open by clicking the Liquid Mix logo in the top left corner of the plugin window. For a more detailed description of the Liquid Mix latency settings, refer to our answerbase article Q: So this is the same product as The Liquid Channel but multi-channel and at a much lower price? A: No. The Liquid Channel is primarily a recording strip and as such, emulates microphone pre-amps rather than EQs. It uses both analogue and digital processes to do this; whereas dynamic convolution is enough to capture the sonic quality of a pre-amp, the interaction with the microphone caused by the analogue front-end also plays a massive part in the character of the original hardware. Consequently, The Liquid Channel needs to have a vast and flexible analogue pre-amp itself, that can be as transparent or coloured, with flexible circuitry and expensive components that can be switched in and out as required. This analogue element comes at a price but is essential for the emulation of pre-amps. Liquid Mix has no need for analogue processing, digital/analogue conversion or analogue connections, since it's solely concerned with processing in the mix, and thus constantly remains in the digital domain. Q: So, how many Compressors and EQs can I use simultaneously? A: The Liquid Mix allows 32 channels of audio to be processed at the same time and each one has a compressor AND an EQ. So, you get 32 compressors and 32 EQs (mono) in one session with Liquid Mix. Q: How many Compressor and EQ emulations are included with Liquid Mix? A: Liquid Mix provides 40 different compressors and 20 EQs. However, the Focusrite website hosts an expanding library so the number of emulations continues to grow. Q: Are the controls of each Compressor and EQ identical to those of the originals? A: Yes and no. For compressors, you have the choice of complete authenticity or free reign, depending on your preference. For example, in the default mode, the controls will be identical to the original, e.g. if there are no attack or release controls then these will be inactive, or if the ratio only has 4 options then these will be the only choices with Liquid Mix. If, however, the FREE button is active then the compressor emulation will have all available controls with full ranges; a dream come true for those who love the sound of the original but want unrestricted control! For EQs, the controls are identical but, and here comes the really exciting part, you can build your own EQs using all of the available 7 slots on the Liquid Mix, as each instance has the option of being a unique, hybrid 7-band EQ. Q: What do you mean hybrid 7-band EQ? A: So, there are 7 available bands of EQ in the Liquid Mix for each channel. You can fill all 7 bands in any way you please. For example, the high-pass filter from a 430 MKII for band 1, the low-mid parametric from a Platinum emulation for band 2, a mid-band from a true vintage emulation for band 3, and so on until band 7. Plus, you can do this for EVERY one of the 32 channels! Q: Is the Liquid Mix cross platform? A: Yes. Liquid Mix can now be used with both Mac OSX and Windows XP. Anyone who bought a Liquid Mix in the first six months of release can download the additional PC drivers from the Liquid Mix Downloads page. Q: Is it only VST? A: No. The Liquid Mix is VST and AU, as well as RTAS compatible (using the FXpansion VST2RTAS wrapper). So, it will work with all audio recording platforms, even Pro Tools. Q: Is Liquid Mix Firewire 400 or 800? A: Firewire 400. Q: What if I only have 4-pin firewire? A: The only difference between the two FW ports is that the 6-pin can supply power and the 4-pin can't. If you only have 4-pin then simply connect up the Mains adapter that's provided to power the Liquid Mix. Q: How do I control each mono instance of the Liquid Mix, from the plug-in window? A: You can control every instance from the software GUI or from the desktop hardware, depending on your preference; each has its benefits. The software shows all control settings simultaneously whereas the hardware allows tactile, hands-on control. The hardware is arguably the quickest as you can easily switch from one track in your session to another, but the GUI has clearer graphical display and metering. Q: What's the expansion card all about? A: This is for people wanting more instances at higher sample rates. Without the expansion card, the number or instances of the Liquid Mix software (maximum number of channels that can be processed simultaneously) reduces as the sample rate doubles, e.g. 8 @ 88.2/96kHz and 2 @ 192kHz. With the expansion card, this number increases to 16 @ 88.2/96kHz and 8 @ 192kHz. Q: Can I run more than one Liquid Mix from the same computer? A: It's only possible to run one Liquid Mix from one computer. You cannot daisy chain Liquid Mixes or attach two to separate Firewire ports. Q: What about using Liquid Mix and a Firewire audio interface like Saffire at the same time if you only have one Firewire port? A: Providing the interface has two Firewire ports, like Saffire, you can chain the two devices together on the one port should not present any problems. However, we often recommend installing an additional firewire bus on the system because the Liquid Mix and firewire audio interface may be competing for firewire bandwidth when running many channels simultaneously. "Sonically, Liquid Mix offers an impressive selection of emulated effects. Even though the functionality is limited to EQ and compression, it feels like a product that has been designed for studio engineers, rather than bedroom part-timers." "There's something for everyone here, from grainy bright transistor effects to beefy 'valvification'. The plug-ins have a distinctive precision and body which is sweet without being thin..." "As one of the more affordable options, there's a great deal to like about Liquid Mix. It's not a bedroom studio magic fairy dust machine, and it needs experienced ears to get the very best from it. But it feels and sounds like a professional tool - a remarkable achievement given the inclusion of a remote and the low price." Recording Magazine review quotes May 2007 Justin Peacock "The Liquid Mix sounds great. In fact, it sounds awesome." "I also love the control surface. It's really well built, has solid construction and a nice small footprint on my desk." "I love the Liquid Mix for mastering. I can add the plug-in, then sit back, listen, focus and adjust settings with the controller in my lap." "Its honestly a fantastic product." " "As expected from a first class pro audio company like Focusrite, Liquid Mix sounds outstanding, and I'd even venture to say that the Focusrite plug-ins are the best I?ve ever heard." "I can tell you that if you want awesome sounding compressors and EQs that really add to your tracks, Liquid Mix satisfies. Each EQ and compression emulation has a distinct quality and vibe with tons of high class (read expensive) character. When it comes to sound quality, Liquid Mix serves up one tall, cool drink of vintage champagne." "It seems most plug-in manufacturers who specialize in recreations of the golden oldies at least attempt to give the interfaces to their creations an appearance somewhat inspired by the originals, but Focusrite spits in the face of convention by giving theirs a uniform look." "Liquid Mix does have some latency, but it isn't as noticeable as on some similar devices, and you can happily play patterns and riffs over your project with it engaged" "...with Liquid Mix, you have all the controls you need right out of the box. What's more, they're incredibly clear and well-presented; as well as a panel of knobs, you get dedicated buttons and even an LCD display." "But of the most important feature of the Liquid Mix - its sound? Well, to say it's sublime is no overstatement." "rest assured that the gear that inspired these models is legendary. In turn, the Liquid Mix offers a depth, warmth and level of character that's unrivaled in all but the finest and most expensive plug-ins. These aren't the kind of workhorse compressors and EQs that you strap over every channel - they're the ones you reach for to give your signals that special something. or to add a touch of professional class." "So, should you shell out for a Liquid Mix? Is it worth it 'just' for EQ and compression? There are other excellent emulations out there...but when you consider its relatively low price and the sheer number of models it offers. Focusrite's box is utterly compelling." User ThoughtsMidge Ure "I have been waiting with anticipation for the Liquid Mix along with half the population of the Earth & was not disappointed! As a long term Liquid Channel user I am was already sold on how well convolution technology can deliver in areas other than reverb. It took me 5 minutes to Install & within an hour I was mastering an album for an up & coming new band called Oversol with fantastic results. 32 [US modern tube] EQ's anyone" Robbie Bronnimann - Independent artist and co-writer/producer with Howard Jones "I just picked mine up this morning from Studiospec. What can I say apart from wow! Installation was simple, so far everything I've heard from it sounds incredible. I'm sure if I could be bothered to A/B it with some of my outboard I might be able to hear a difference but to my ears memory it sounds too good to bother. I'll let you all know if it still sounds this good when I've had a bit more time with it, but initial views are very positive. Well done Focusrite, the best £500 I've spent." Robbie Bronnimann - Independent artist and co-writer/producer with Howard Jones "I've been using the Liquid Mix on new tracks for my band Cosmic Rough Riders' 8th studio album, which I'm tracking and mixing partly at home. As you can imagine the Liquid Mix has been nothing short of a god send, and I'm honestly so happy that I chose this unit over any of it's competitors. The only way I find my mixes can stand beside those done in a great studio are by using Liquid Mix, using a purely native approach in the past has yielded a less than satisfactory work flow and final result. It is a truly ingenious box that occupies a massive gap in the market, and a technology I'm sure that is still largely untapped." Stephen Fleming "I cannot believe the level of quality that this unit offers at such an affordable price. For engineers like myself who desire racks of analogue hardware but lack the stacks of cash to afford, the Liquid Mix is a dream." John Ashmore - Engineer - UK "My goodness me this thing's amaaaaaaaaaazing. Downloaded it all today. At first my PC didn't like having that and the Project Mix on firewire at once, but they seem to have settled their differences, but being hopeless at compressing etc, just having the snapshots and pre-picked emulations is fabulous. Many thanks." Al Murray - of 'Pub Landlord' fame "I have got, a liquid mix for my protools LE since 3 months for PC. I tried it today with the PC drivers. Waouuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu:-) Very very very Incredible. The real sound." Emmanuel Ducloux - www.manu-ducloux.com "Plugged it in and instantly i re-recorded some tunes that initially where being send out for cutting. After i tried the liquid mix i was very happy i waited just a little longer. The blue monster really works and sound very, very natural and convincing! Thank you for such a great job. Just for the horsepower i will buy a second very soon i reckon!" Patrick van Kerckhoven - Netherlands "I just wanted to say thank you for liquid mix and congratulate you guys for an absolute fantastic product. the emulations sound excellent and it works pretty much flawless with logic pro" Marc Schlaile - access music "The Liquid Mix is a really cool product. I think you'll get no better stuff at that price. This little box will change my attitude to digital mixing. Great piece of work, you all at Focusrite!" Dirk Naepel - Berlin, Germany "I got Liquid cos of the things I heard and read, mainly cos of the Fairchild component, but as well cos of the other features. After a few sentences I said I wanna have it; I think the concept of adding whatever hardware to a Mac via Firewire or USB is just great and should be the basic way of doing things, NOT PCI or whatever internal hardware cards. All the best to you all, yours Michael Weikath" Michael Weikath, Spain "FANTASTIC!!!... LIQUID MIX HAS RAISED NOTABLY THE QUALITY OF MY JOB!!!" Mirco Moscatelli, Italy "I have just bought a Liquid Mix and I couldn't be happier. Let's face it, it was a pretty tall order for Focusrite to claim "every EQ and compressor in history, nailed". But, I gotta hand it to you guys, you nailed it. To anyone out there wanting to get "that sound", get a Liquid Mix and nail it. To my musician friends asking what I think of my Liquid mix, I tell them "to quote Austin Powers - yeah baby!" If your on a budget like me, it's an agonizing decision on what new gizmo to spend your money on for your studio. A new tube mic, a preamp or whatever. After buying and using Liquid Mix I am convinced that I could not have gotten more bank for the buck with anything else, even items costing hundreds more. This thing rocks." Ron Wilson "I am absolutely astonished that I paid under $1000 for this! It is worth way more! I love this thing!" Jason Ray - TSB Studios and Production, Birmingham AL "What Focusrite & Sintefex have delivered here has to be the "must-buy" unit of the year - nay, the decade - so far. It's hard to single out any one specific area for praise over the others, as the combination of all the parts make up a unit that nobody should be without. Whatever your discipline, there is something here for you: Mixing, Mastering or Post Production for film & TV - all will find the addition of an LM unit to be the best investment they will make for a long time to come. With 40+ compressors, and virtually unlimited EQ combinations when you take into account the "Hybrid EQ" option, the sound you are looking for is in here somewhere. At first glance it seems a simple enough device, but don't let the very user-friendly interface fool you, as under the hood are all the classic units we have all heard of but rarely get the chance to use due to either cost implications or scarcity due to the originals being long since out of production. From the comparisons I have been able to make, the emulations here are of a uniformly high quality making the LM a unit that will be equally at home anywhere from a small budget home studio setup all the way up to the High End commercial facilities. Absolutely awesome value for money - this really is a unit that should be on every desktop." Neil Wilkes - Director - Opus Productions Ltd "I just wanted to write & thank you guys! It's an incredible bit of kit, how you folks make it for that price I will never know, I have just finished blind A/B ing it with some of the 'real' hardware units, and you folks have hit the nail on the head here! I have been a big fan of convolution technology, having first hand experience of how it has helped me to model the hardware reverb units that I own perfectly & use them with more instances, more control & total recall without patching etc. Without ever having to worry that it was in some way inferior to the ‘real’ thing, because I had tested them personally and knew them to be identical even down to a scientific test level when you run a comparison track & invert the phase & they null out Now that I have this Dynamic Convolution technology at my fingertips, I feel that all the ‘real’ hardware I have access to is going to get very dusty indeed’ 32 channels, total recall & much more flexibility’ you just can't go wrong! Many Thanks" Nick - www.nickhemingway.com - Nick Hemingway - Engineer - Cheshire, UK "I think I was one of the first studio owners in Los Angeles to own a Liquid Mix. With that said, I have to congratulate you and the company for such a great, cost saving product. I just finished the second article, review of the Liquid Mix in this months Electronic Musician magazine. Stellar! I believed that this product was seriously revolutionary...I have 14 music compositions posted on my website, www.RFaraldi.com . You can hear the difference between mixes that the Liquid Mix was used on and songs that didn't have it in. Five of the pieces there were "professionally" mastered by an outside engineer! I think what we did here sounds better. If you want to hear for yourself, the songs I wrote for the Visitorz on my site were the "mastered" versions. They sound glossy to me now. Although they are MP3's you can really hear the difference. Compare those songs to the music "No Peace" and "New Jersey". What a difference! Have a great day! And thank you so much for such a great and sonically sound piece of equipment and software!" Russell Faraldi - RFMX Sound & Music Productions, LLC - Secret Stash Studios "I have been franticly trying to EQ and COMPRESS a female voice over track (in Logic Pro 8) to make it sound even but tight, and have been pulling my hair out. I bought the Liquid Mix on the recommendation of my media equipment supplier and WOW! it took me all of 5 minutes to get exactly the sound I wanted. Hats off Focusrite you are truly GODS among us mere sound engineers. Thanx Guys." Stephen Parsons "So far, the Liquid Mix has lived up to its reviews and hype. As a digital media consultant in both web development, I'm really pleased with the control surface. It is clear that some research and thought went into the design of the interface. It's intuitive and clear. Great Work!" Bryan Kulba - Canada "This "little box" is incredible! Perfect integration with daw, warm and powerful sound. Thank you Focusrite." Alessandro Lamuraglia - Keyboard Player - Italy "With a product like Liquid Mix, with such a low price, extra quality and super ease of use, i can bet my arm you'll soon have more demand than you can satisfy!! It's only the beginning ;-) Please surprise us soon with new outstanding (and affordable) products like the Liquid Mix. I spent the whole last night testing my brand new Liquid Mix, and I'm really convinced that only 2 types of (home-studio) producers still don't own one : - Those who never heard a LM in action. - And those who just don't know LM exists !! ;-) Thank you to the whole Foscurite team, your brand has just entered my top 3 revolutionary teams And at last, i really have to thank you for allowing nearly anybody to reach that other level of producing, thanks to the Liquid Mix."
