Although James has brought in a very capable in-line analogue console, he has chosen to use a pair of Focusrite OctoPre MkII Dynamics as the front end to his Logic-based DAW setup. The Focusrite preamps give him a clean, warm sound that he can 'colour' at a later stage using additional outboard gear or plug-ins.
Today, he is recording a string quartet in the live room. On microphone duties are AKG C414s for the violins and Neumann U87s for the viola and cello. Overhead, a pair of KM184 small-diaphragm condensers capture the overall room sound. Everything goes through the Focusrite preamps.
James Stone: "The OctoPres are very very clean, so I can record the signals then do what I want to do with them if I want to change the sound. They're really good quality, in fact I could tell very little difference between them and my ISA 428!"To find out more about the band, head to
